Public Meeting: Save Warrender Park Road Post Office!10.57.06am UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 3rd Sep 2008
Mike Pringle MSP has called a public meeting in the main church hall at Marchmont St Giles Church, Kilgraston Road on Tuesday the 9th of September at 7:30pm, all local residents are invited. The issue at hand is the future of Warrender Park Road Post Office which has been earmarked for closure by the Westminster Government as part of their rationalisation plans to close 2500 Post Offices across the UK. A representative from the Royal Mail will be present so the meeting will provide an excellent opportunity for Local residents to air their views and ask questions as to the reasons behind the proposed closure. A good turnout may well be vital in showing community support for the Warrender Park Road branch. Mike Pringle has also launched a petition against the closure which is available to sign at Mike Pringle said "Warrender Park Road Post Office Provides a vital local service and I will be campaigning hard alongside local residents to save it from closure. "The City of Edinburgh Council recently voted overwhelmingly by a margin of 43 to 15 to condemn these cuts, which just goes to show the depth of feeling among Edinburgh residents. "Rather than looking to close down further Post Offices the Government should be looking at ways to revitalise the Post Office network by introducing new services and extending the term of the Post Office Card Account." As well as attending the meeting local residents can also get involved in the campaign by submitting their own response to the Royal Mail's public consultation into the proposed closure. Some points to consider are that •Hilly terrain Locally will make access to alternative post office at Tollcross and Bruntsfield very difficult for the elderly and disabled •There is a limited amount of pay and display parking at the alternative post offices. •The closure of Warrender Park Road would mean the loss of Saturday afternoon postal facilities and late weekday opening hours which are popular with local residents. If you decide you would like to comment simply put the response in an envelope, address it to National Consultation Team, Post Office Ltd, Freepost Consultation Team and hand it in to Mr Smalley at the Warrender Park Road Branch, no stamp is required. Please note that Post Office Ltd. may not keep your comments confidential unless you specifically ask them to. All submissions must be with the Consultation Team by the 29th of September so please make sure yours is handed in by the 26th. If anyone would like to know more about what the Edinburgh South team is doing to save Warrender Park Road Post Office further information is available at http://edinburghsouthlibdems.org/
