Pringle Condemn's Government's Broken Malawi Aid Promise

3.35.01pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 26th Feb 2008

Speaking during a debate on Malawi in the Scottish Parliament, Liberal Democrat MSP for Edinburgh South Mike Pringle condemned the Government for breaking a manifesto pledge to increase the international aid budget by 100 per cent.

"I am extremely disappointed that the Government has failed to meet its manifesto commitment to increase the aid budget by 100 per cent.

"I have been fortunate to visit Malawi twice and have seen first hand how important international aid is to the population.

"International aid is a lifeline to groups such as the nurses who are funding advanced life support training in obstetrics for health care professionals.

"It's a bit cheeky for the Government to hold a debate about Malawi when it has backtracked on this manifesto promise."
