Support Tearfund's Carbon Reduction Campaign for Lent - Pringle

11.38.22am UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 6th Feb 2008

Mike Pringle MSP has given his support to the Tearfund campaign encouraging people to reduce their carbon footprint for Lent as an alternative to giving up chocolate or sweets. Part of the campaign includes encouraging shoppers to turn down plastic bags at supermarkets in favour of more environmentally friendly reusable alternatives.

Commenting, Mr Pringle said:

"I fully support this great initiative by Tearfund encouraging people to reduce their carbon footprint for lent.

"One of the most effective ways of doing this is to cut down on the number of plastic bags people use for everyday shopping at supermarkets.

"Supermarkets and individuals need to act more responsibly if we are to make any significant impact in reducing our carbon footprint. I strongly urge people to support this excellent campaign."

Pete Chirnside of Tearfund Scotland said

"We are delighted that Mike has got behind our campaign.

"Climate change effects everyone, but the tragedy is that it is often the worlds poorest that are the hardest hit, with frequent floods and drought causing serious problems. It is time for the developed world to take more responsibility for its carbon footprint.

"The people of Scotland have a chance to make a real statement of intent this Lent, I would encourage everyone to do their bit by taking the little steps that make a big difference."
